Jerusalem and the Holy Land

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem

For two thousand years this narrow corridor of land at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean has exercised an influence on world culture far out of proportion to its modest size.

The ancient city of Jerusalem is one of the most historically important places in the world and has the unique distinction of being a cornerstone of 3 of the world's great faiths.  Within its hallowed sandstone walls lie some of the most significant religious sites in existence: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, dedicated to Jesus Christ, the Western Wall, sacred to the Jews, and the dramatic Dome of the Rock, Islam's third holiest site.

Jerusalem is the great magnet for both pilgrim and tourist, but the surrounding lands have much to offer, from Lake Galilee in the north with its many Christian links, to the coastal towns of Caesarea and Acre with their Roman and Crusader remains.  To the east in the Jordan Valley lies the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, whilst on the Mediterranean coast to the west can be found Tel Aviv, the dynamic metropolis that represents the spirit of the modern state of Israel.
