Bhutan Tours - Gangtey Goemba

Gangtey Goemba (also called in some guidebooks 'Gangteng Monastery') is the most important building in the Pobjikha Valley.  The extensive complex consists of the central goemba (Mahayana Buddhist monastery), monks' quarters and a small guesthouse.  Originally built in the 16th century, the monastery has been rebuilt and renovated on several occasions, the most recent being a wide-reaching makeover in 2008 (the picture below shows the monastery prior to this).  Gangtey Goemba is built in Tibetan style with eight great pillars, and is one of the largest in Bhutan.
