Archery in Bhutan
Archery is Bhutan's National Sport. It is played all over the country wherever there is enough space. Known in Bhutan as datse, the sport is considered more than mere entertainment, and usually involves special ceremonies amd traditions; it is also accompanied by songs, dances and jeers, and near-primitive howls! The targets are placed 140 metres apartand the arrows move so quickly you hear rather than see them, so take care if you stray close to the contest!
Since 1984 Bhutan has participated in the archery competition at the Olympic Games. Nowadays it is becoming common to see more modern carbon-fibre bows in place of the traditional bamboo ones.
