Buffalo Mountain Lodge

Tucked away from the majority of Banff hotels, Buffalo Mountain Lodge lies on the gentle slopes of Tunnel Mountain, a short walk from the centre of town.

The Main Lodge complements its natural setting with square timber, post and beam construction, and high open ceilings. Decor pays tribute to old-world craftsmanship, from custom-made cherry, pine and bent-willow furnishings to copper and glass light fixtures. Simple, elegant design is a hallmark of the resort, and symbolizes the lifestyle at the Lodge. It includes a charming lounge with a huge fieldstone fireplace, dining room, conference rooms, indoor recreation area, steam room and an outdoor hot tub.

The 108 guest rooms at Buffalo Mountain Lodge have balconies or patios (except one-bedroom suites), wood burning fieldstone fireplaces and private baths. Room amenities include feather duvets and pillows, telephones, cable televisions, in-room coffee makers, clock radios, irons/ironing boards and hair dryers.

World Discovery website prices are based on the excellent Lodge Rooms (pictured left), which have a king, queen or two double beds and a wood burning fieldstone fireplace which is stocked daily with complimentary firewood. As the idea is to provide a quiet retreat, there is no TV in the room. Upgrades are available to Premier Rooms, which do have cable TV and also pine ceilings, larger bathrooms with heated slate floors and a separate stand-up shower.

The Sleeping Buffalo Restaurant at Buffalo Mountain Lodge has won numerous awards for its innovative Rocky Mountain Cuisine. Drawing on the heritage of the hearty meals prepared by Swiss and Austrian mountain guides in Victorian times, the cuisine includes smoked, cured or roasted wild game, fresh indigenous berries, wild fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and mixed grains. The wine list has been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its outstanding collection of over 500 of the world’s finest wines including Canadian VQA selections. There is also the Cilantro, which offers bistro-like food and also has outdoor seating. Open from Wednesday to Sunday only (and closed between September and December), it offers Californian cuisine.
