Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom
Coconut Lagoon is located on a small island in Kerala’s famous backwaters and is considered to be among the top 10 heritage resorts of the world.
Accommodation, built in traditional Keralan style, is divided into Heritage Bungalows, Heritage Mansions (with downstairs living room and upstairs bedroom) and the highly recommended Private Pool Villas. Though some of the buildings are of more recent vintage, many are well over a century old and a few actually date back to the early 1700s. Though varying in individual configuration, all rooms feature modern bathrooms, each located in an inner courtyard and open to the sky, so you can shower al fresco under a starlit sky in complete and utter privacy. All rooms have a safe, a tea/coffee maker and a hair drier. There are no televisions in the rooms, but free Wifi is available.
Coconut Lagoon has a large swimming pool (below right), a fitness centre, a Yoga and Meditation Centre (where free yoga classes are held every morning at 7 a.m.) and an Ayurveda Wellness Centre. The restaurant specialises in Keralan cuisine peculiar to the region, and cooking demonstrations are held on most days prior to dinner.
Activities here are just relaxing beside the swimming pool, walking in the nearby coconut groves or paddy fields, and sunset cruises. There is also a Butterfly Garden. Adjoining the resort is one of Kerala's top bird sanctuaries.
Coconut Lagoon can only be reached by boat, a 10 minute ride from the jetty at Kavanatinkara.
