Deer Lodge, Lake Louise

Deer Lodge, Lake Louise

In the late 19th century a log tea house was opened by one of the early guiding families a short stroll from Lake Louise. It quickly became a popular gathering spot for visitors and the rapidly growing local population of guides. Over the years, the lodge and tea house expanded into Deer Lodge.

Owned and managed by the Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts since 1985 (when it was reopened after extensive renovations) this historic property retains many of the architectural features from the original building, and most of the rooms are furnished with antiques from the early years.

Deer Lodge is ideal for guests looking for a quiet retreat, with excellent and innovative cuisine and attentive staff. The views never fail to dazzle, making this jewel of the Rockies renowned, the world over. Deer Lodge, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, offers 73 rooms, all with private baths and complimentary in-room safes. Lake Louise itself is only a few minutes walk from the lodge entrance.

The rooms present an eclectic mix of historical and modern, with many different layouts. The original tower rooms (on which the World Discovery website prices are based) were restored to their original condition under the watchful eye of the Historical Society, complete with original cast iron radiators, woodwork, lighting and brass fixtures. All rooms have a telephone, but none has a television. Deer Lodge is unique. If you wish, you can leave behind the modern world and exist in a place and a time that is truly relaxing.

The lodge has a wonderful outdoor hot tub, from which you can view the spectacular Victoria Glacier as you relax.

Deer Lodge has one of the best dining rooms (The Mount Fairview, pictured left) in the Canadian Rockies. You can sample Rocky Mountain Cuisine, the roots of which go back to both the lavish Victorian cooking from the CPR rail cars and the hearty meals prepared by Swiss and Austrian mountain guides. The result of these diverse influences is a combination of smoked, cured or roasted wild game, fresh indigenous berries, wild fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and mixed grains.

The wine list is extensive and features many award-winning Canadian wines from central British Columbia and the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario, and includes a large selection of hard to find vintners' reserve wines. Deer Lodge has proudly received Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence.

The Caribou Lounge, with magnificent views of the Victoria Glacier, is open for lunch and breakfast. Enjoy afternoon tea, light snacks or a late night cognac in the original log teahouse. Later, relax in front of our stone fireplace, enjoy a quiet moment in our cedar sauna or gaze at the stars over the Victoria Glacier from our outdoor rooftop hot will take your breath away.
