Kerala and South India Holidays
The tropical backwaters, uncrowded sandy beaches and the forested mountain slopes of the Western Ghats, home to to tea, coffee and spice plantations, make Kerala one of India's most popular holiday destinations, so different from the better known Northern areas of Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle and the Himalayan foothills.
Kerala is a place to relax, to drift through palm-lined waterways on a converted rice boat or kettuvalom, to try a little yoga or sample some ancient and traditional ayurveda treatments.
If you like history, then a stroll through the colonial UNESCO-rated streets of Fort Cochin, with its Chinese, Arabian, Roman, Portuguese, Dutch and British influences, is a rewarding experience you will not forget.
The nearby southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu combine well with Kerala and offer a variety of attractions, such as the fabulous Maharajah's palace at Mysore, the atmospheric former British hillstation of 'Ooty', the elaborately carved temple towers of Kanchipuram, and the architectural wonders of the Hindu Holy City of Madurai. Also attracting more and more interest is the region known as 'French India', including the fascinating city of Pondicherry.
