Temple of Hathor at Denderah

Temple of Hathor at Denderah

This beautiful temple was almost completely buried in sand until its rediscovery in the 19th century and as a result is one of the best-preserved in Upper Egypt. Although the temple you will explore dates from the Greco-Roman era, there have been shrines to Hathor at Denderah since pre-dynastic times. One of its highlights is the astronomical ceiling in the Hypostyle Hall, with its symbolic representation of the heavenly bodies.  You can also ascend from the Hall of Offerings to the roof of the temple where, in one of the two rooftop sanctuaries you can see a plaster cast of the famous Denderah Zodiac (below) now in the Louvre in Paris.
