The Monastery of St Simeon

The Monastery of St Simeon

Egypt Holidays - St Simeon Monastery

A visit to the Monastery of St Simeon is one of the most popular excursions from Aswan.  It can be reached either on foot - an energy-sapping walk across the desert - or you may choose to hire a camel (this is recommended and our agents will arrange this for you).

Founded in the seventh century and rebuilt in the tenth, the monastery was badly damaged in 1173 by the forces of the Muslim conqueror Salah-al-Din (perhaps better known in English as Saladin, the chivalrous opponent of the Crusaders). The now roofless basilica still bears traces of frescoes of the Apostles, although these were largely scratched out by the Muslim invaders.

Below: the journey by camel begins.
