Taj Mahal and Agra Fort
Enjoy a visit to what is generally regarded as the world’s most romantic building – the glorious white-marble Taj Mahal, built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. This magnificent monument, a fusion of Indian Hindu and Persian Muslim architectural traditions, never fails to impress. Much of the white marble surface of this fabulous mausoleum is inlaid with Koranic inscriptions and floral patterns of precious stones (below right). Continue to the huge red-sandstone Agra Fort overlooking the River Jumna; this was the seat and stronghold of the Mughal Emperors for successive generations. From the ramparts there are excellent views of the Taj Mahal (below left).
