Elgin Silver Oaks, Kalimpong
The Silver Oaks in Kalimpong was built in 1930 by a British jute merchant; it has been tastefully converted into a charming boutique hotel surrounded by landscaped gardens. The hotel recalls the days of the British Raj, with hot water bottles in your bed at night - it gets cold even in the hotter weather at this altitude - and 'bed tea' in the morning. The teak floorboards and an excellent collection of watercolours and lithographs reflect the opulence of the old times.
All the bedrooms (below) are bright and sunny with a magnificent view (weather-permitting) of the Himalayan peaks, including mighty Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.
Service is personalised and available round the clock. High tea with cakes and biscuits is served in the tea lounge or in the garden. Replete with candlelit dinners and tunes from the piano, the multi-cuisine restaurant can make any evening memorable. The Oak Bar offers a wide choice of cocktails and snacks and you can also lose relax in the comfortable Lobby Lounge (below).
