Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Bharatpur

Keoladeo Ghana National Park at Bharatpur, India's premier bird-watching sanctuary, was designated as World Heritage Site in 1985.  Developed originally as a hunting reserve for the Maharajah of Bharatpur, the park is a paradise for birds.  This vast area of swamp and lake constitutes one of the world's most important ornithological breeding and migratory areas; some 375 species have been recorded, including around 200 residents.  The park is best known for its huge concentration of aquatic birds, including Painted Storks (pictured).  Excursions in the park are made on foot, by cycle rickshaw or by boat (for the latter you may have to share with other passengers; the boat trips also operate only when water levels are adequate).
