CAMBODIA HOLIDAYS FACTFILE

Recommended flight from London: Thai Airways International from London Heathrow to Phnom Penh via Bangkok (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

DAY 1 - Arrive Phnom Penh.  City highlights.

Arrive in Cambodia's capital city in the morning.  You will be met outside customs by a representative of World Discovery and taken by private car direct to your centrally-located hotel.  Your Cambodia holiday begins in the afternoon when you take a private guided tour of Phnom Penh.

DAY 2 - Phnom Penh.

At leisure in Phnom Penh, a pleasant city which still retains much of the charm of French colonial days, with its tree-lined avenues and lack of high-rise architecture.  There are several temples worth a visit, such as Wat Ounalom, dating back to the 15th century, or Wat Phnom (the hilltop sanctuary that gave its name to the city). For those who have an interest in the more recent history of Cambodia, there is the harrowing Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, or further afield outside the city, the infamous 'Killing Fields' (the Choeung Ek Memorial).  Visits to these moving sites can be easily arranged.  In the late afternoon you can take an enjoyable cruise on the Mekong and watch the sun set behind the graceful towers of the Royal Palace.
Meals included: Breakfast

Cambodia Holidays - Woman from BanlungDAY 3 - Overland journey to Banlung (Rattanakiri Province).

A long and tiring road journey today (the flights to Rattanakiri Province are no longer operating) will take you through Kampong Cham, Kratie and Steung Treng provinces (duration approximately 12 hours, with frequent stops to stretch your legs). Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant in Kratie (see below). Your destination in Rattanakiri is Banlung, known as the 'Red City' due its deep red laterite soil. The next few days will be spent in this remote area of north-east Cambodia close to the borders with Laos and Vietnam, a fascinating region little visited by tourists. The rich and fertile lands are covered with rubber, coffee and sugar cane plantations, and fruits such as bananas and pineapples grow in abundance. On arrival check in at your guesthouse in time for dinner.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Cambodia Holidays - River dolphins, Kratie
STAY A NIGHT IN KRATIE
If you prefer you may break the journey with an overnight stay in Kratie, a small town on the Mekong River.  The town has basic but comfortable accommodation and there is the possibility of seeing river dolphins.  If you take this option, the order of the sightseeing programme in and around Banlung would be rearranged.

Cambodia Holidays - Kreung village bachelor houses

DAYS 4 TO 6 - Rattanakiri.

Three days to enjoy this fascinating remote area with your guide, travelling both by road and by boat.  As well as scenic natural attractions such as the Ou Chum and Thmo Da waterfalls, or the extraordinary Yeak Loam crater lake, you will visit the unique graveyards of the Kachoun tribe; in this part of Cambodia, animism is more prevalent than Buddhism, and the dead are therefore buried rather than cremated, with haunting wooden effigies of the deceased erected above ground.  In Virachey National Park you will explore villages of the Kreung people, with their peculiar custom of erecting 'bachelor houses' standing on long bamboo poles (pictured); these houses will remain until the young man finds a wife; then they are destroyed. You will also visit a Brou village. The Brou are a Mon-Khmer people scattered in small pockets in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, driven by the southward movements of the Tais from China centuries ago.  Also on your busy programme are visits to a rubber tree plantation, a legacy of French colonial days, and to some gem mines. Many local people earn incomes from hand-digging various precious stones. Be careful of the holes in the ground!  At beautiful Bai Srog Waterfall, a seven-tiered fall in the middle of the jungle, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a swim beneath the falls.
Meals included: Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner each day.

DAY 7 - Drive to Kampong Cham.

After an early breakfast leave Banlung and take the long overland drive to the town of Kampong Cham on the banks of the Mekong.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

DAY 8 - By road to Battambang.  Ek Phnom Temple.

Leave Kampong Cham after breakfast and travel by road to Battambang, arriving in the early afternoon. Later visit Ek Phnom, an 11th century Hindu temple built in the reign of Suryavarman I.  Overnight in Battambang.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 9 - By private boat to Tonle Sap Lake and Siem Reap.

Travel by private boat along the Sanker River to Tonle Sap Lake. Every 90 minutes or so the scenery changes along the way, from a thriving 'extended village' with many stilt homes and fishing nets, to the open plains for the seasonal jute crops, to wetlands providing a natural nursery for fish and birds.  En route you will visit the floating village of Chong Kneas, an entire community built on the waters of Tonle Sap Lake, before reaching Siem Reap, gateway to the incredible temples of Angkor, the foremost archaeological complex in Asia.  Check in to your hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast, picnic lunch.

 Cambodia Holidays - Angkor Wat

DAY 10 - Temples of Angkor. Roluos Group.  Angkor Wat.

During the next three days you will enjoy the most comprehensive exploration of this exceptional area, visiting all the major temple groups. This morning you will be shown some of the earliest temples in the Roluos area.  In the afternoon drive to the magnificent 12th century temple of Angkor Wat (left) the best known of the Angkor sites, approached by a long causeway.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 11 - Angkor Thom.  Ta Prohm.

Today's visits include some of the most majestic of Angkor's temples, mainly dating from the Kingdom of Jayavarman VII (1181-1219). We begin with the awesome Royal City of Angkor Thom. In the afternoon explore the atmospheric ruins of Ta Prohm (pictured), overtaken by the forces of Nature, with gnarled tree roots wrapped around crumbling columns and carvings, and walls leaning in all directions.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 12 - Siem Reap.  Depart for home.

Your last day in Siem Reap is at leisure.  If you are still keen on visiting more temples, there is certainly no shortage of them!  We would recommend Preah Khan, a vast temple around whose outer walls, 40 metres apart, are giant carvings of the Hindu deity Garuda, and Neak Prean, which consists of a central pool and four peripheral pools once used for purification rites.  If you wish to do some last minute shopping we highly recommend the excellent Artisans Angkor, whose profits are channelled into local education and welfare projects.  We have arranged for you to keep your room for a late check out at 18.00.  In the evening transfer to the airport for your included flight by Bangkok Airways to Bangkok to connect with your onward flight in the early morning.
Meals included: Breakfast.

International and connecting flights.

There are no direct flights to Phnom Penh from the UK. We recommend the services of Thai Airways International from London Heathrow via Bangkok. Flights are daily throughout the year. Current timings (subject to possible change) are as follows:
Heathrow/Bangkok. Depart at 11.50; arrive Bangkok at 06.10 (next day)
Bangkok/Phnom Penh. Depart at 07.45; arrive Phnom Penh at 09.00
Bangkok/Heathrow. Depart at 01.10; arrive Heathrow at 07.15

You can book the flights yourself on the easy-to-use Thai Airways International website, using the 'Multicity' option.  Alternatively World Discovery can book the flights for you (we levy a service charge of £25 per person for this service).
