The rest of the day is at leisure.  Recommended flight from London: British Airways from London Heathrow (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

Thailand Holidays - Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

DAYS 2 AND 3 – Bangkok.

Bangkok never ceases to amaze, with its infinite palette of sights, sounds and smells and the gracious hospitality of its people who are always willing to exchange a few words next to a street stall.  There are some 'must see' historic attractions such as the Grand Palace with its fabulous Emerald Buddha, the glittering Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn) and the magnificent Royal Barge Museum, but Bangkok is also the place to experience the local culture of today.  Our expert guides know the streets of the capital like the back of their hands and guarantee a memorable visit.  Stroll through Chinatown and sample a traditional Yum Cha meal, an early light lunch that involves drinking Chinese tea and eating dim sum dishes, or take a tour by tuk-tuk (motorised rickshaw) to the night markets and dine on delicious street food.  Go shopping for silk at the legendary Jim Thompson's House, or discover what it means to be Thai and the excellent new Museum of Siam.  Further afield, if you don't mind a very early wake-up call, there's the world-famous 'floating market' at Damnoen Saduak to the west of Bangkok (pictured).
Meals included: Breakfast each day.

DAY 4 - Fly to Sukhothai.

In the morning take the short flight by Bangkok Airways to Sukhothai, the capital of Thailand from 1240 until the early 15th century; this afternoon you will visit the attractive ruins, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Particularly impressive is the enormous Wat Mahathat, surrounded by a moat, which is regarded as the spiritual focus of the ancient city.  Overnight in Sukhothai.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Thailand Holidays - Wat Pradhat Lampang LuangDAY 5 - Si Satchanalai.  Lampang.  Elephant Conservation Centre.  Chiang Mai.

After breakfast leave your hotel and visit Sukhothai's twin city of Si Satchanalai, also now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some superb structures including the Sri Lankan-style Wat Chang Lom or 'Elephant Shrine'.  Continue to the town of Lampang, located on the Wang River.  Your first stop is at the well-preserved Wat Pradhat Lampang Luang (pictured), one of the most famous temples of Northern Thailand whose huge central chedi (reliquary tower) enshrines a hair of the Buddha.  Afterwards enjoy a ride by traditional horse carriage through the city's streets before driving out to the TECC (Thai Elephant Conservation Centre).  Here you will learn about the problems facing elephants today in Thailand, and also connect with the giant beasts themselves. You will be first be briefed on practical safety issues, so that you will be confident as you watch – up close – the mahouts bathing their elephants.  In afternoon continue north, with a stop en route at a local market, to Chiang Mai, Thailand's second city, once the capital of ancient Lanna, 'the Land of a Million Rice Fields'.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Thailand Holidays - Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang MaiDAY 6 - Chiang Mai.

After breakfast begin your guided exploration of Chiang Mai. You will start at the Arts and Cultural Centre (closed on Mondays) where an orientation presentation will help you better understand the history, arts and culture of this northern region. Next visit the impressive Wat Phra Singh, which contains some superb examples of Lanna wood-carving, and continue to Wat Chedi Luang (pictured),  home to 'The Pillar of the City', a totem used in ancient Thai fertility rites because the temple itself marks the exact centre of Chiang Mai. In the afternoon you will go up to the summit of Doi Suthep Mountain (1,600 metres) to visit the 600 year old temple of Wat Phra Doi Suthep.  The ascent to the temple is via a magnificent Naga (dragon-headed serpent) staircase of 306 steps (a lift is available if this is too strenuous an option). On a clear day, the views over the city are magnificent. Return to your hotel. In the late evening you can visit Chiang Mai's famous night bazaar.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 7 - Chiang Mai.

Today has been left free for you to explore Chiang Mai on your own.  The people of this charming city are famous for their easy-going lifestyle, and there are many fascinating small temples in the old town, as well as markets for food, clothing and handicrafts.  We can enrol you in a Thai Cooking Class if you want, including a visit with a guide to the local fresh market to buy the ingredients and help in preparing your own 4 course meal!  After dinner why not go hunting for a bargain at Chiang Mai's renowned Night Bazaar?
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 8 - Drive to the 'Golden Triangle'.

A scenic drive this morning via the hot springs at Mae Ka Chan will take you to the famous 'Golden Triangle', the place on the mighty Mekong River where the borders of Laos, Burma and Thailand converge.  In the afternoon take an enjoyable cruise by long-tailed motor-launch on the river.  Overnight at your riverside hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 9 - At leisure.  Depart.

At leisure.  We will arrange for you to keep your room until 1800 hours.  Transfer to Chiang Rai Airport in the evening for the flight to Bangkok to connect with your homeward flight.
Meals included: Breakfast.
