Flights NOT included - see below

DAY 1 – Arrive Lima.

On arrival in Lima you will be met outside customs and immigration by a representative of World Discovery and taken by private car direct to your hotel.  Recommended flight from London: KLM from London Heathrow via Amsterdam (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

DAY 2 - Lima.

After breakfast your private guide will collect you from your hotel and take you on a tour of Peru's historic capital, including the modern suburb of Miraflores overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  Afternoon free.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 3 - Fly to Cusco.

This morning take the early flight to Cusco, the former capital of the Incas, located in the High Andes at an altitude of 3,399m/11,150ft.  After resting for a while to adjust to the thinner air, in the afternoon you will enjoy a guided walking tour of this historic city.  Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 4 - Cusco.

The morning is spent exploring Cusco and its surrounding sites, including the imposing megalithic citadel of Sacsayhuaman, the temple of Qenco, the fortified hunting lodge at Puca Pucara and the imperial baths of Tambo Machay.  The afternoon is at leisure in Cusco.  In the evening you will be given a briefing on the trek to Machu Picchu.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Peru Holidays - Salkantay LodgeDAY 5 - Your trek to Machu Picchu begins.  Follow the Royal Road to Salkantay Lodge.

After an early breakfast, you will be picked up by your guide at 7 a.m. and driven with other members of your trekking group to Marcocasa, where the trek begins. En route you will make a brief visit to the Inca ruins of Tarawasi and stop for coffee in the mountain village of Mollepata.  You will be walking along an ancient Inca route called the Camino Real (Royal Path). This is a good opportunity for everyone to acclimatise, while enjoying a beautiful six hour trek. Salkantay Lodge (pictured), where you will sleep tonight, is located at 3,869m/12,690ft, and takes its name from the majestic peak at the head of the valley—Mt. Salkantay, the second most sacred peak in Inca mythology and, at 6,270 m/20,600 ft, the highest in the region. After a warm welcome by the friendly staff, you will be shown to your room and have time to wash-up before tea and biscuits. The trip leader will hold a briefing by the fireplace, followed by aperitifs and dinner.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6 hours (including picnic lunch en route).
Walking Level: Moderate.
Option: Guests who do not wish to trek may be transported to the lodge by vehicle.

Peru Holidays - Lake HumantayDAY 6 - Walk to Lake Humantay.

Today enjoy an 'acclimatisation walk' on the slopes above the lodge to glorious turquoise Lake Humantay (left), fed by the hanging glaciers of Mt. Humantay. The walk is optional, but the views are amazing, and those brave enough can even go for a dip in the lake.  Return to the lodge for lunch, after which you may choose to trade the glacial swim for a relaxing soak in the lodge's outdoor Jacuzzi.  The afternoon is at leisure.  Overnight at Salkantay Lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Trekking Time: Approximately 4 hours.
Walking Level: Moderate to Challenging.
Option: Horseback Riding.

DAY 7 - Crossing the Salkantay Pass.

This is the big day! After an early start, walk up the Rio Blanco valley, circling Humantay Peak across from Salkantay Peak. The highest point on the trek is the Salkantay Pass at 4,638 m/15,213 ft.  At the pass stop to take in views of the snowcapped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range in every direction, the glaciated south face of Salkantay towering above us.  Keep your eyes peeled for Andean condors, often visible in this area.  From the pass descend towards Wayra Lodge (3,906m/12,812ft), your destination for the evening.  A hot lunch is served en route; dinner and overnight at the Lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Trekking Time: 6–8 hours (including lunch).
Waking Level: Challenging, crossing a 4,640m/15,200 ft mountain pass.

Peru Holidays - Wayra LodgeDAY 8 - Descending into the Cloud Forest.

After a leisurely breakfast at Wayra Lodge (left), continue your descent along the left bank of the Salkantay River, through increasingly verdant scenery.  You can feel the warm air rising from the jungle, accompanied by colourful butterflies and striking orchids.  Upon arrival at Colpa Lodge you will be greeted with a Pachamanca meal, a traditional festive Peruvian meal cooked by layering meat and vegetables with hot stones, and then covering the whole thing up to bake.  Colpa Lodge is located at 2,870m/9,414ft on an open plateau at the confluence of three rivers. The outdoor Jacuzzi has panoramic views of lush green mountains.  Spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring the nearby orchid trail.  Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Trekking Time: 3–4 hours.
Walking Level: Easy to Moderate.

Peru Holidays - Santa Teresa River Valley

DAY 9 - Following the Santa Teresa River Valley.

Today you will walk along the Santa Teresa river valley, through more populated rural areas, passing through banana, granadilla, and avocado orchards, and coffee plantations (said to be one of the best organic coffees in the world).  A hot picnic lunch is served by the river.  After lunch, walk for another hour before a private vehicle meets the group for a short drive to the beginning of the Llactapata Inca Trail.  From the head of the newly restored Inca trail make our way to Lucma Lodge, set in an avocado orchard at 2,135m/7,003ft.  Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours (including lunch).
Walking Level: Moderate to Challenging (because of distance, not terrain).

Peru Holidays - Machu Picchu with Huayna Picchu in the background

DAY 10 - First Views of Machu Picchu from Llactapata Pass.

After a hearty breakfast, tackle the last day of your trek.  Head uphill for 2-3 hours towards Llactapata Pass (2,736 m/8,974ft), where you will come upon a distant but spectacular view of Machu Picchu Sanctuary from the southeast, a view few travellers ever get a chance to admire.  Take a short break to explore the Llactapata Ruins, which have recently been restored.  Lunch is served at a scenic viewpoint, looking out towards Machu Picchu.  You will then begin your final descent to the Aobamba River through lush bamboo forests, orchards and coffee plantations.  Aguas Calientes, the town below the ruins of Machu Picchu, is a short, scenic train ride away. Upon arrival, check into your hotel for a celebration dinner with your guide and one last briefing!
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Trekking Time: 4–6 hours.
Walking Level: Moderate to Challenging.

DAY 11 - Machu Picchu.

After a very early buffet breakfast at the hotel, take the bus up around the hair-pin bends to Machu Picchu Sanctuary, where your guide will give the group an introductory two-hour guided tour of the ruins, after which you have the rest of the morning to explore the site on our own.  This modern wonder of the world never disappoints.  Spend a second night in Aguas Calientes.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

DAY 12 - Machu Picchu.  Train to Cusco.

The morning is free.  You may return to Machu Picchu for further exploration if you choose (a supplementary cost of £60 per person covers bus transfers, entrance fees and the opportunity to climb to the summit of Huayna Picchu overlooking the ruins).  In the afternoon board the Vistadome train for the return journey to the Sacred Valley and onwards to Cusco.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

DAY 13 - Return to Lima.  Depart.

In the morning return by air from Cusco to Lima to connect with your homeward flight.
Meals included: Breakfast.
