This adventure in the northwest Andean valleys of Argentina can be added on to any of our other Argentina itineraries.  This is one of the most spectacular mountain regions of the country, with weird and wonderful tortured rockscapes, including the multi-coloured mineral hills of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.  There's also a wealth of colonial architecture and some of the best vineyards in Argentina. The tour begins in Salta and ends in Tucumán.

Argentina Holidays - Salta - High Mountain Archaeology Museum - MummyDAY 1 - Arrive Salta.  High Mountain Archaeology Musem.

On arrival in Salta you will be met by a representative of World Discovery and taken by private car to your hotel to freshen up before setting out to visit the fascinating High Mountain Archaeology Museum.  The star attraction here is the mummified body of one of the three children discovered in 1999 at the peak of Llullaillaco (a 6,739m volcano near the Chilean border); it is believed that the children were sacrificed in Inca times to appease the gods; the perfectly-preserved grave goods that accompanied them are also on display.  The remainder of the day is free.

Argentina Holidays - Salta - San Francisco ChurchDAY 2 - Salta.

Founded by the Spaniards in 1582, Salta is one of the most elegant colonial-style cities in the Americas.  This morning enjoy a tour of the principal attractions, including the lovely Cabildo (Historic Museum of the North) on the main square, the striking San Francisco Church with its exuberant magenta and yellow facade (left), and the exterior of the 16th century Convent of San Bernardo with its dazzling whitewashed walls (only Carmelite nuns may enter the building).  You will also ascend to the summit of San Bernardo Hill for a panoramic view over the city, and then spend time at the artisan market.  The rest of the day is free.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 3 - Salta.

At leisure in this charming city.  Our agents are on hand to organise any optional sightseeing you might wish to do.

Argentina Holidays - Humahuaca - The Hill of the Seven ColoursDAY 4 - Humahuaca Gorge.  Tilcara.  Jujuy.

After breakfast depart for the amazing Humahuaca Gorge, one of the highlights of any visit to Argentina's northwest.  Above the village of Permamarca is perhaps the most unusual mountainscape you'll find anywhere, the Hill of the Seven Colours (left), featuring some of the area's most vibrant mineral colourings.  Continue to the pretty town of Tilcara to visit the Archaeological Museum and the Pucará, a pre-Inca stone fortress commanding the river in both directions.  At Uquía you will stop at the beautiful 17th century church, before reaching the town of Humahuaca around lunchtime (lunch not included).  In the afternoon return to Salta via the city of Jujuy, founded by the Spaniards in 1593.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Argentina Holidays - Cafayate - Cafayate GorgeDAY 5 - Cafayate.

Today you will leave Salta and head south to the colonial city of Cafayate.  Your route takes you through the surreal Cafayate Gorge, with its bizarre rock formations caused by wind and rain erosion.  Cafayate is also one of Argentina's premier wine-producing regions, and is known worldwide for its Torrontés wine.  On arrival in the city visit a winery for wine-tasting and lunch.  The afternoon is free.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

Argentina Holidays - Tucuman - Ruins of QuilmesDAY 6 - Quilmes.  Tafí del Valle.  Tucumán.

After breakfast depart for the ruins of Quilmes (left), an urban settlement dating from around AD 1,000 which once had a population of 5,000.  Continue over a high mountain pass, offering magnificent views, before descending to the lovely hilltown of Tafí del Valle, located at an altitude of 2,100m/6,890ft.  Visit the 18th century Jesuit Chapel of La Banda and then descend through the spectacular Río de los Sosas Gorge to Tucumán.  In the afternoon enjoy a tour of this important city, the cradle of Argentine independence, including the Cathedral, Independence Square, the Casa Histórica and the 9th of July Park.  In the evening, for those who are interested in Argentina history, there is a Sound and Light performance at the Casa Histórica in the evening (daily except Thursday).
