Guided walking in the Everest foothills staying in comfortable ensuite lodges

Until a few years ago trekking to the Everest Region meant staying in tents or tea houses. It is now possible to trek in comfort staying in lodges that provide ensuite facilities, ideal locations, and magnificent views.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Kathmandu.

On arrival in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal, you will be met by a representative of World Discovery outside immigration and customs. You will then be taken by private car direct to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.  Recommended flight from London: Qatar Airways from London Heathrow via Doha (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

DAY 2 – Kathmandu.

Your World Discovery Nepal holiday begins after breakfast, when you meet your private guide and spend the morning visiting the highlights of Kathmandu. The afternoon is at leisure, with the opportunity of taking an optional excursion to Patan.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 3 – Fly to the Everest Region.

In the morning fly to Lukla, gateway to the Everest foothills (2,850m/9,317ft).  Here you will be met by your trekking crew and driven the short distance to your lodge.  The rest of the day is spent in Lukla so that you can acclimatise to the higher altitude.  In the afternoon you will visit a local monastery and have time to walk around the village.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

DAY 4 – Lukla to Monjo (2,8350m/9,301ft).

Your trek begins with a 3 hour walk to Phakding, starting with a gentle downhill section through beautiful scenery. There will be plenty of hot lemon tea stops and a chance to meet the locals and take plenty of photographs. Reach Phakding in time for lunch.roIn the afternoon resume your trek, following the left bank of the Dudh Koshi River, and continuing through a forest and past small villages to the Yeti Mountain Home in Monjo.  The lodge enjoys spectacular views of the Thamserku peak (6,623m/21,650ft).
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Walking time: 5 to 6 hours.

Nepal Holidays - Namche Bazaar

DAY 5 – Monjo Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,286ft).

After breakfast start your walk to Namche Bazaar (the ‘Sherpa Capital’, pictured).  Descending stone steps you come to a suspension bridge, and, after a short climb you reach Jorshale.  This is the entrance to the National Park, and you must wait here while your guide pays the entrance fees. Walking beside the river, you reach a forested mountainside and pass a rocky area.  After crossing a high, winding path, you descend to the riverbed and reach a V-shaped valley.  The river forks here: the right stream is the Dudh Koshi and the left is the Bhote Koshi that leads to Nangpa La. Crossing another suspension bridge and walking a short distance alongside the Bhote Koshi, you ascend to Tup Dhara where you will get the first view of Mount Everest and enjoy hot lemon tea with biscuits.  From here you ascend gradually to Namche Bazaar, where you will arrive in time for a late lunch.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Walking time: 5 hours.

DAY 6 – Namche Bazaar day excursion.

An easy 1 hour walk after breakfast takes you to the '50th Anniversary Tenzing & the Sherpas of Everest’ Memorial Stupa. The views from here of Mount Everest, Lohtse, Nuptse, Amadablam and the surrounding peaks of the Khumbu is breathtaking.  After the visit you will be taken to the Sherpa Cultural Centre and given a half hour presentation by Lhakpa Sherpa, an expert on Sherpa culture. To speak to him you will need to write on a piece of paper as he lost his hearing when he was young. You will also be shown a typical Sherpa home and an excellent photo exhibition on the Sherpas who have climbed Everest since 1953. After lunch at your lodge you are free to head down to the Namche market for shopping and great bargains wait for you. You may also see the Tibetan traders who make a yearly journey from the Tibetan plateau to sell at the market.  At 4 pm you will be taken to visit the 80 year-old Namche Monastery, which has beautiful Thanka paintings of Tibetan deities.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Walking time: 2 hours.

DAY 7 – Namche Bazaar to Thame (3,440m/11,286ft).

After breakfast begin your walk to Thame.  You will pass through a beautiful pine forest and see typical Sherpa houses along the route. This trail forms part of the ancient route to Tibet and passes near the 8,012m/26,285ft peak of Cho Oyu, first climbed in 1954. A lunch stop is made at Thamo, the home of Ang Rita Sherpa, who holds the record for scaling Mt Everest ten times without oxygen.  After lunch ascend gradually, passing a monastery where nuns live, to the village of Samden.  From here you descend to a bridge and cross the Bhote Koshi River.  A further half hour of ascent takes you to Thame village, where you will stay for the next two nights.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Walking time: 5 hours.

Nepal Holidays - Stupa near ThameDAY 8 – Thame local excursions.

After breakfast take a half-hour walk up to the 14th century Thame Monastery. This monastery is located in the Khumbu region, 200 metres above the village.  It is set on the southern slope of Sumdur Mountain under a very high rocky cliff, noted for its dramatic rock formations.  After lunch back at your lodge you can also visit the home of two famous Sherpas: the late Tenzing Norgay, first conqueror of Everest, and Appa Sherpa, who has now climbed Mount Everest 20 times.  Thame is one of the most renowned villages of Khumbu and has produced many climbers.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Walking time: 4 hours.

DAY 9 – Thame to Monjo.

Return along the same route to Namche Bazaar and continue to Monjo.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Walking time: 6 hours.

DAY 10 - Monjo to Lukla.

Retrace your steps back to Lukla passing through the village of Phakding.  The trail followed is fairly easy with some steady climbs through scrub forests and a final steep ascent that leads to a Tamang village, and shortly thereafter to Lukla.  Here you will bid farewell to your porters and the trekking staff who have accompanied you for the last week.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Walking time: 5 hours.

DAY 11 - Return to Kathmandu.

After breakfast transfer to Lukla Airport for the flight back to Kathmandu.

There are no direct flights between London and Kathmandu. We recommend the services of Qatar Airways from London Heathrow to Doha with a good onward connection to Kathmandu. Flights are daily throughout the year. Current timings (subject to possible change) are as follows:
Heathrow/Doha. Depart at 15.05; arrive Doha at 23.89
Doha/Kathmandu. Depart at 01.05 (next day); arrive Kathmandu at 08.30
Kathmandu/Doha. Depart at 09.30; arrive Doha at 11.45
Doha/Heathrow. Depart at 12.30; arrive Heathrow at 17.55

You can book the flights yourself on the easy-to-use Qatar Airways website.  There are many other connecting routes, some of which may offer lower fares.  We recommend the Skyscanner website for searching for the best options.  Alternatively World Discovery can book the flights for you (we levy a service charge of £25 per person for this service).
