Our recommended hotels are shown below.
Cape Town has a wealth of hotels to choose from. The main decision will be the location of the accommodation you select. In the City Centre, close to the Parliament, the Company's Gardens and the major museums, we recommend the attractively-priced Townhouse, a low-key boutique property (91 rooms) with excellent service and sensational food, or you could opt for the colonial splendour of Cape Town's most historic hotel, the Belmond Mount Nelson (pictured left), affectionately known as 'The Nellie'.
Cape Town's world-famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is now the city's most popular shopping area, and also houses many pubs, restaurants and attractions, as well as a good choice of hotels, including the 4-star Victoria & Alfred Hotel, right in the heart of things, and its nearby sister properties, the 5 star Queen Victoria, well-known for its cuisine. For the ultimate in luxury, there's the Cape Grace Hotel (pictured right).
Some visitors prefer to base themselves outside the city, either besides the white sand beaches of the Atlantic Seaboard, or in the leafy suburbs of Constantia or Newlands, both within easy reach of the centre. The ever-popular Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, near the famous cricket ground, has the atmosphere of an English country house, and also boasts two of Cape Town's best restaurants, while the elegant Glen Avon Lodge, a converted 18th century Dutch manor house, is in the heart of the Constantia wine-growing district. For sheer indulgence, you might consider the award-winning Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa (pictured left), overlooking Camps Bay with its spectacular sunsets.
Located in a malaria-free area close to the border with Botswana, Madikwe is a 'Big 5' destination which also boasts a prolific birdlife. Choose between three luxury lodges - Madikwe Safari Lodge, Tuningi Safari Lodge or Sanctuary Retreats' exceptional Makanyane Safari Lodge (pictured left), which offers just 8 secluded air-conditioned suites.
