PRE- AND POST-TOUR ACCOMMODATION
World Discovery is happy to book accommodation before and/or after your stay at the Great Bear Lodge. The seaplane departs from Port Hardy on DAY 1 at 15.00 hours so you should be able to reach there on the same day. On the return, the seaplane is scheduled to arrive in Port Hardy between 16.00 and 18.00. Wilderness weather, however, can cause delays and for this reason we strongly recommend that you plan to stay the night of DAY 4 in Port Hardy. Hotels are often busy due to Port Hardy's position as the southern terminus of the popular 'Inside Passage' cruise, so early booking is essential.
When to go.
These grizzly bear viewing holidays are offered from May to October. Each season has its own distinctive character. Spring (7 May to 30 June) sees you taken to the estuary to observe the grizzlies as they graze on grasses and sedges and engage in mating behaviour. Birdlife is abundant at this time of the year, and long hours of daylight ensure optimal light for photography. At this time you will view the bears from small boats, watching the bears quietly. During the Summer season (1 July to 18 August) the grizzlies move between the various habitats to optimize their feeding. You will find them gorging on berry patches, grazing on estuarine grasslands and scouting for the early salmon. The grizzly bears congregate at the river in Autumn (19 August to late October) to take advantage of the best food source available on the coast:Pacific salmon. Watch as each individual bear demonstrates its own fishing style, from methodically checking under riverbanks with their paws to charging up the river after salmon.
TAILOR MADE OPTIONS
We naturally wouldn't expect you to fly all the way from the UK to Western Canada for a 3 night stay! Let World Discovery put together a longer tailor-made holiday to fit your exact requirements in Canada, both west and east. We can also book your international flights if you wish (we levy a service charge of £25 per person for this service).
