INDIA HOLIDAYS FACTFILE

DAY 1 - Arrive Delhi.

On arrival in Delhi you will be met by a representative of World Discovery outside immigration and customs. You will then be taken by private car direct to your hotel.  Recommended flight from London: British Airways from London Heathrow (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

DAY 2 - Delhi.

At leisure in India's capital. Optional sightseeing can be arranged to visit the highlights of India’s capital city, including the colossal Qutb Minar, the amazing 73-metre high Victory Tower completed in 1236 to celebrate Qutb-ud-Din’s defeat of the Turks, and the elegant Humayun’s Tomb, a fine example of early Mughal architecture.
Meals included: Breakfast

India Holidays - Pinjore GardensDAY 3 – By rail and road to Nalagarh.

Leave Delhi this morning by Shatabdi Express train (in air-conditioned 'Chair Class') for Chandigarh, a journey of approximately 3 and a half hours.  You will be met on arrival and taken to visit the attractive Mughal Gardens at Pinjore (left). After lunch nearby continue by road to Nalagarh Fort for overnight (see note below).
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Note: Nalagarh Fort is a recognised 'Heritage' property and is full of atmosphere.  The fort is almost 600 years old and has retained most of its original features.  The rooms, however, are all different, and are not as well maintained as we would prefer.  We feel overall it is better to stay here as a break in an otherwise very long journey to your next destination, Pragpur.  If you prefer you can bypass the night at Nalagarh and proceed direct from Pinjore to Pragpur, arriving in the early evening.

DAY 4 - Continue into the Himalayan Foothills.

This morning drive into the Himalayan foothills to reach Pragpur, located at 610m/2,000ft in the Kangra Valley.  You should arrive around lunchtime.  The medieval village of Pragpur, with its cobbled streets and mud-plastered houses, has been awarded 'Heritage' status by the State Government. Step back in time as you explore the centre of this friendly place. The Indian National Trust is involved with preserving the buildings of the village, with the active participation of the local community.
Meals included: Breakfast, dinner.

DAY 5 – Pragpur.

A day for further exploration of this delightful destination.
Meals included: Breakfast, dinner.

DAY 6 – By road to the Kullu Valley.

Drive via the city of Mandi, where you will have lunch, into the magificence of the Kullu Valley, one of India's most beautiful regions. Your accommodation is in the village of Katrain at the Span Resort on the banks of the Beas River.
Meals included: Full breakfast, lunch.

India Holidays - Kullu Valley DAYS 7 AND 8 – Kullu Valley.

Two days to relax in the beautiful surroundings, or to explore the hills, orchards and villages of the valley. A steep walk from near your resort takes you up through pine forest to the 16th century Naggar Castle, from where there are stunning views of Kullu and the River Beas. A half hour drive north to the head of the valley brings you to the busy town of Manali, the main tourist centre of the region, where you can visit the Tibetan Monastery built by refugees, or shop in the colourful bazaars. Also worth seeing in Manali is the 27-metre high, pagoda-style, Hadimba Devi Temple. For the most spectacular views of all, you can continue beyond Manali to the dramatic Rohtang Pass (3,985m/13,074ft), gateway to Ladakh.
Meals included: Breakfast each day.

Pictured above: view of the Beas River from the Span Resort.

India Holidays - Christ Church, Simla

DAY 9 – By road to Simla.

Return down the Kullu Valley to Mandi, where you will again have lunch, before continuing to Simla, the former summer capital of the British Raj, perched on a ridge at 2,213m/7,260ft.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

Pictured left.  Christ Church, Simla.  One of the many architectural legacies of the Raj years.

DAY 10 - Simla.

A full day to enjoy Simla.
Meals included: Breakfast.

 India Holidays - Wildflower Hall

SIMLA: GET AWAY FROM IT ALL
If you prefer to experience the true solitude of the Himalayan foothills, an alternative to staying in the city of Simla itself is to relax at Wildflower Hall, former residence of Lord Kitchener, a luxury retreat about an hour's drive from the city.  We would be pleased to give a quote for the additional cost.

India Holidays - The Toy Train from SimlaDAY 11 - The 'Toy Train'.  Return to Delhi.

For a real taste of the Raj, depart from Simla this morning by the UNESCO World Heritage 'Viceroy's Toy Train', built by the British at the beginning of the 20th century.  Enjoy the most spectacular sector of the journey from Simla to Solan, where you will disembark and be taken by road to Chandigarh for the onward journey by Shatabdi Express train back to Delhi (see below for details of the full journey from Simla to Kalka).  Transfer on arrival to your Delhi hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast.

THE VICEROY'S TOY TRAIN - THE FULL JOURNEY
For enthusiasts who wish to cover the whole journey from Simla to Kalka - taking you over a total of 864 bridges and through 103 tunnels - we can certainly arrange this, but the duration is just under 6 hours (rather than the 3 hours to Solan), and means a much later arrival in Delhi.

DAY 12 – Depart.

Private transfer to the airport for your international flight home.
Meals included: Breakfast.

India Holidays - Bandhavgarh - Royal Bengal TigerSTAY ON IN INDIA
After your journey through the Himalayan foothills why not extend your stay in India to visit more of this vast country's many attractions?  You might want to head off in search of the majestic Bengal Tiger in one of India's top wildlife reserves, witness the timeless dawn rituals of Hindu pilgrims in the Ganges at Varanasi, or marvel at the amazing temples of Khajuraho.

International Flights.

We recommend the daily services of British Airways from London Heathrow. Flights are non-stop and have a choice of classes. Current timings (subject to possible change) are as follows:
Heathrow/Delhi. Depart at 10.20; arrive Delhi at 23.15
Delhi/Heathrow. Depart at 08.30; arrive Heathrow at 13.00

You can book the flights yourself on the easy-to-use British Airways website.  There are other direct flights and also many other routes involving connections en route.  We recommend the Skyscanner website for searching for the best options.  Alternatively World Discovery can book the flights for you (we levy a service charge of £25 per person for this service).
