THAILAND HOLIDAYS FACTFILE

Recommended flight from London: British Airways from London Heathrow (see below).  If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

DAY 1 - Arrive Bangkok.

On arrival in Bangkok you will be met outside customs by a representative of World Discovery and taken by private car direct to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.  Recommended flight from London: British Airways from London Heathrow (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

DAY 2 - Bangkok.

Bangkok never ceases to amaze, with its infinite palette of sights, sounds and smells and the gracious hospitality of its people who are always willing to exchange a few words next to a street stall.  There are some 'must see' historic attractions such as the Grand Palace with its fabulous Emerald Buddha, the glittering Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn, pictured left) and the magnificent Royal Barge Museum, but Bangkok is also the place to experience the local culture of today.  Our expert guides know the streets of the capital like the back of their hands and guarantee a memorable visit.  Stroll through Chinatown and sample a traditional Yum Cha meal, an early light lunch that involves drinking Chinese tea and eating dim sum dishes, or take a tour by tuk-tuk (motorised rickshaw) to the night markets and dine on delicious street food.  Go shopping for silk at the legendary Jim Thompson's House, or discover what it means to be Thai and the excellent new Museum of Siam.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 3 - Bangkok.  Board the overnight train to Ubon Ratchathani.

At leisure in Bangkok to explore on your own.  We will arrange for you to keep your room until 1800 hours.  In the evening you will be taken to the Railway Station to board the overnight Sleeper Train to Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand's far northeast Isaan Province.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 4 - Ubon Ratchathani.  Khong Jiam.

Local breakfast is available on the train but we will provide breakfast on arrival in Ubon Ratchathani.  Take a brief look at this small city, including the unusual Wat Thung Si Muang temple, before setting off for the tiny town of Khong Jiam, Thailand's easternmost town, situated on at the confluence of the Mun and Mekong rivers.  The remainder of the day is at leisure.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Thailand Holidays - Pha Taem National Park DAY 5 - Mekong boat trip.  Sao Chaling.  Pha Taem National Park.

After breakfast take a long-tailed boat along the Mekong and the Mon rivers to visit Sao Chaling, with its surreal rock formations.  Continue to Pha Taem National Park and enjoy a walk to view the 4,000 year old paintings on the face of a cliff overlooking the Mekong (pictured).  The walk of 3.5km is relatively easy and offers great views, as well as taking you through bamboo forests and areas of delicate wild flowers.  Lunch will be included at a local restaurant before you return to your resort for an afternoon of relaxation by the pool, or you may choose an active time making use of the bicycles or kayaks belonging to the resort.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

DAY 6 - Khmer Temple of Si Koraphom.  'Elephant village'.  Surin.

In the morning depart for the town of Surin.  Everyone knows about the temples of Angkor, but the Khmer Empire spread far beyond the modern boundaries of Cambodia and there are several superb ancient Khmer sites in this region of northeast Thailand.  Today you will visit the ruins of Si Koraphom with its fine lintel carvings and continue to Ban Tha Klang, known as the 'elephant village'.  The Suay people who live here have traditionally made their living from working with elephants, and you will learn the history of their involvement and nurturing techniques.  There is a small elephant museum.  Time-permitting, you will pay a short visit to the silk-weaving village of Ban Tha Sawang, before reaching Surin for an overnight stay.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

Thailand Holidays - Prasat Muang Tam DAY 7 - Phanom Rung.  Prasat Muang Tam.  Continue to Khorat.

Regarded as the finest example of Khmer architecture in Thailand, the temple of Phanom Rung is your first visit today. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, Phanom Rung is graced by exquisite carvings, including the famous lintel above the east entrance depicting a reclining Vishnu. The approach to the main temple is particularly impressive, a 200 metre avenue symbolising the journey from earth to the heavenly place of the gods. You will also explore the small but elegant 11th century temple complex of Prasat Muang Tam (pictured), characterised by its four L-shaped ponds set around a central gallery.  Continue, with lunch en route and a short stop at the pottery village of Dan Kwian, to the town of Khorat.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

DAY 8 - Phimae.  Khao Yai National Park.  Pakchong evening market.

After breakfast visit the impressive Khmer ruins of Phimae, known for their intricate sandstone carvings, before driving to Khao Yai National Park, Thailand's first National Park (1962) which has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status.  Before dinner pay a visit to the daily evening market at nearby Pakchong.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

Thailand Holidays - Khao YaiDAY 9 - Khao Yai National Park.

Encompassing a wide range of habitats, Khao Yai National Park boasts over 300 bird species - including 4 different varieties of hornbill - and twenty large mammal species; it is the only place in Thailand where you have a realistic chance of seeing wild elephants (pictured).  There are many walking trails to take advantage of the wonderful scenery.  Today you will explore the park with a naturalist guide, including a visit to a cave just outside the park at dusk to witness the amazing spectacle of millions of bats emerging in a twisting black cloud in search of their nightly food.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

DAY 10 - Khao Yai National Park.  Depart.

Spend further time in the park until your afternoon departure to Bangkok Airport for your homeward flight.
Meals included: Breakfast.
