On this 10 day self-drive holiday you will enjoy the diversity of Cape Town before setting off on a relaxing journey through the Garden Route finishing off in style with a luxurious stay in the malaria-free Kariega Game Reserve.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Cape Town.

On arrival at Cape Town's International Airport you will be met outside customs and immigration by a representative of World Discovery and taken by private car direct to your hotel. Your rental vehicle will be delivered to your hotel.  The rest of the day is at leisure.

DAYS 2 AND 3 - Cape Town.

At leisure in South Africa's 'Mother City'.  You might wish to take the famous cable car (left, weather-permitting) to the summit of Table Mountain for a panoramic view of the city.  Other attractions worth visiting are Bo-Kaap, also known as the Malay Quarter, one of the city's oldest residential districts characterised by brightly coloured 19th century Dutch and Georgian terraces, Company's Gardens, established in 1652 to supply fresh greens to the Dutch East India Company but now dedicated to botanical horticulture, or the 17th century Castle of Good Hope.  You could also take a full day's tour of the Cape Peninsula, including the winding roads of Chapman's Peak, one of the world's most spectacular ocean drives, or drive into the lovely Cape Winelands area.

South Africa Holidays - Oudtshoorn - Cango CavesDAY 4 - Leave Cape Town for your journey along the 'Garden Route'.

South Africa's famous 'Garden Route' is renowned for its beautiful coastal and mountain scenery, taking you from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth past picturesque beaches, sparkling lagoons and indigenous forests on a journey of more than 400 miles.  After an early breakfast leave Cape Town this morning and drive via Montagu and the arid Little  Karoo region to your accommodation in Oudtshoorn.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 5 - Oudtshoorn.

Full day at leisure to explore Oudtshoorn, known as the 'ostrich capital of the world'.  Visit the spectacular limestone Cango Caves (left), one of the world's great natural wonders, sculpted by nature through the ages.  Or you might wish to visit an ostrich farm.
Meals included: Breakfast.

DAY 6 - Continue via George to Knysna.

Leisurely breakfast. Take in the breathtaking views as you travel over the Outeniqua Pass to George on the shores of the Indian Ocean and continue onward via Wilderness and Sedgefield to Knysna, your home for the next 2 nights. Afternoon at leisure.

South Africa Holidays - Knysna LagoonDAY 7 - Knysna.

Full day at leisure to explore Knysna. Visit the Knysna Elephant Sanctuary or board a ferry across Knysna Lagoon to visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve.

South Africa Holidays - Tsitsikamma National ParkDAY 8 - Via Plettenburg Bay and Tsitsikamma to Kariega Game Reserve.

After an early breakfast continue along the 'Garden Route' to the popular beach resort of Plettenberg Bay, and on to one of the most scenic sections of the journey via the cliffs and forests of Tsitsikamma National Park, including the dramatic Storms River Mouth (pictured).  Passing the town of Port Elizabeth, reach your lodge in malaria-free Kariega Game Reserve in time for afternoon high tea followed by an open vehicle game drive, accompanied by an expert ranger.
Meals included: Breakfast, dinner.

Kariega Game Reserve is relatively little known but offers excellent close up viewing of the Big 5 – lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo – as well as multitudes of other South African safari wildlife, all from the comfort of an open game drive vehicle.  Early morning tea and coffee is followed by a game drive or perhaps a river cruise.  Return to the lodge for brunch.  Afternoon high tea followed by another game drive.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

 

DAY 10 - Final game drive.  Drive to Port Elizabeth.  Depart.

Early morning tea and coffee followed by your final game drive. Return to the lodge for breakfast.  Drive to Port Elizabeth Airport to drop off your rental vehicle in time for your departure flight.
Meals included: Breakfast.

 

International Flights

We recommend the direct services of British Airways from London Heathrow. Flights are daily throughout the year. Current timings are as follows:
Heathrow/Cape Town. Depart at 21.30; arrive Cape Town at 09.55 (next day)
Port Elizabeth/Johannesburg.  Depart at 13.30; arrive Johannesburg at 15.05*
Johannesburg/Heathrow. Depart at 19.05; arrive Heathrow at 05.05 (next day)
Virgin Atlantic also offer daily flights between London Heathrow and both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

* The Cape Town/Johannesburg flight is operated by Comair and may be booked via the British Airways 'Multi-city' option along with the British Airways international flights.

You can book the flights yourself on the easy-to-use British Airways website.  South African Airways also offer daily flights from London Heathrow to Johannesburg.  Alternatively World Discovery can book the flights for you (we levy a service charge of £25 per person for this service).

  • Hotel and lodge accommodation as listed above in twin-bedded or double rooms (please let us know which you prefer) with private facilities.
  • 9 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 2 dinners as shown in the itinerary.
  • Private transfer on arrival in Cape Town.
  • 10 days' car rental (based on Group D vehicle - VW Polo 1.6 or similar).  Upgrades are available to larger cars.
  • Shared transportation at Ukhozi Safari Lodge with an experienced ranger and tracker.
  • All gameviewing as shown (unless indicated as ‘optional’), including entrance fees.

Not included in the price:

  • International and domestic flights (see our recommendation above). We are happy to discuss the flights with you and give you further guidance.
  • International airport taxes.
  • Optional sightseeing. The World Discovery representatives in South Africa will be pleased to organise any additional sightseeing you may wish to include during your stay.
  • Tipping. We will give you guidance in this often sensitive matter.

A deposit of £250 per person is required at the time of booking, plus the cost of the international airfare and service charge if World Discovery is booking the flights on your behalf.  . The balance of the price for your South Africa holiday must be paid at least 8 weeks before your departure date.
