FURTHER ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS
Victoria Falls has a wealth of hotels to choose from. For those looking for a more traditional base, the venerable Victoria Falls Hotel (pictured), opened in 1904, is set in lush tropical gardens within view of the famous Victoria Falls Bridge. The more modern Ilala Lodge is another upmarket alternative, as is the family-friendly Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. If you are looking for somewhere a little more affordable the comfortable Gorges Lodge, just 30 minutes from town, may be the solution; it's in a stunning setting on the edge of the Batoka Gorge, some 200 metres above the Zambezi.
HWANGE NATIONAL PARK
Accommodation in Hwange has improved dramatically in recent years and there are now several excellent options, including the eco-friendly Somalisa Camp (with just 7 luxury tents) in the heart of the park. In the south-east corner of Hwange, situated in unspoilt acacia woodlands and boasting an excellent 'look-up hide (pictured) is Camelthorn Lodge; here you can enjoy elephant tracking on foot and fantastic birding. Another good choice is the well-known luxury tented camp The Hide, overlooking a productive waterhole.
Accommodation on the Canoe Trail is basic. If caneoing all day and staying in mobile camps is not for you, there are two alternatives. One is to join a guided 3 day Shoreline Walking Trail, which is similar in concept, but is based on more comfortable tented accommodation with flush toilets. Or you can simply stay in a lodge in this UNESCO World Heritage area. We recommend either Ruckomechi Camp or Kanga Camp (right), both offering upmarket accommodation, great food and the full range of activities at Mana Pools - canoes, fishing, game drives, night drives and walking safaris.
The Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and Spa is a destination in itself. There is no alternative accommodation nearby.
