Explore the contrasts of this spectacular land on a historic journey from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta.

Recommended flight from London: Thai Airways International from London Heathrow to Hanoi via Bangkok (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Hanoi.  Afternoon city tour.

On arrival in Hanoi in the early morning you will be met outside customs by a representative of World Discovery and taken by private car direct to your hotel.  In the afternoon enjoy an orientation tour of Hanoi, including the Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter.

DAY 2 – Hanoi.

The day is at leisure in Vietnam's capital city.  There are several interesting museums you could visit - the Museum of Ethnology, or the History Museum - or you might simply want to return to the atmospheric Old Quarter with its shops, restaurants and bars.  In the early evening there is the opportunity to watch a traditional Water Puppet show at the Municipal Theatre.  The World Discovery agents can organise any of these visits for you.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Vietnam Holidays - Halong Bay Cruise DAY 3 - Halong Bay Cruise.

After breakfast depart from Hanoi for your visit to one of the world's most spectacular natural wonder's - World Heritage-designated Halong Bay, where you will embark upon your selected luxury junk for a 2 day/1 night cruise.  After a welcome cocktail and Asian buffet lunch enjoy the stunning scenery of the bay.  Explore Hang Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) with its amazing rock formations, watch a demonstration of Vietnamese cooking, and visit the Tung Sau Pearl Farm.  There will also be opportunities for swimming or kayaking.  Round off the day with a sumptuous 5-course set dinner.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

DAY 4 - Halong Bay Cruise.  Fly to Hue.

Rise early if you wish for a Tai Chi session on the sundeck.  There will be further opportunities this morning for swimming or kayaking, and you might also wish to climb the 400 steps to the summit of Titop Island for a breathtaking panoramic view over Halong Bay.  Your cruise continues until mid morning when you disembark at Tuan Chau Island.  Return by road to Hanoi in time for the evening flight to the former royal capital of Hue.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Vietnam Holidays - The Imperial Citadel in Hue DAY 5 - Hue.

This morning enjoy a boat cruise on the Perfume River to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda and the Imperial Citadel.  In the afternoon drive just outside the city to the Royal Tombs of the all-powerful Nguyen dynasty who ruled over Vietnam in the 19th century and who switched the capital from Hanoi to Hue.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Left: Inside the Imperial Citadel.

DAY 6 - Via Danang to Hoi An.

Travel along the scenic coastal road south to Danang to visit the small but interesting Cham Museum. The Cham dynasties ruled over southern Vietnam for more than a thousand years (4th to 15th centuries). Continue to the picturesque port of Hoi An and transfer to your hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Vietnam Holidays - Hoi An market DAY 7 - Hoi An.

In the morning explore the unique trading town of Hoi An, with its beautifully preserved ancient houses and fully pedestrianised streets - perfect for a walking tour.   Visit the local market, the unusual Japanese covered bridge and a Chinese communal house.  The afternoon is free.  An optional excursion could be arranged to the evocative Cham city of My Son, recently recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
Meals included: Beakfast.

HOI AN - New optional Electric Scooter Tour - see World Discovery Blog for March 2015.

DAY 8 - Fly to Saigon.

Return to Danang and fly to Ho Chi Minh City, better known as Saigon.  On arrival you will be taken into the centre of the city for a brief tour, including the Presidential Palace (now a museum), the History Museum and Notre Dame Cathedral.  The rest of the day is at leisure.
Meals included: Breakfast.

Vietnam Holidays - Tributaries in the Mekong Delta DAY 9 - The Mekong Delta.

Travel south along the highway into the surrounding countryside where you will pass lush rice paddies before reaching the town of My Tho.  Here you will board your motorised sampan for a unique experience on the mighty Mekong Delta waterways.  You will see how, to the people of Delta, the water is a lifeline - the focus of all daily activity - as you journey through a maze of tributaries and fruit plantations.  Enjoy a sample of delicious fruit in the shade of a fruit farmer's garden before continuing via even smaller waterways to take lunch at a local house.  Return to Saigon in the afternoon.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

DAY 10 - Saigon.  Depart for home.

At leisure.  An optional excursion is available to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels.  We will arrange for you to keep your room until 1800 hours.  Transfer to the airport in the evening for your homeward international flight.
Meals included: Breakfast.

International Flights

We recommend the daily services of Thai Airways International from London Heathrow via Bangkok. Current timings (subject to possible change) are as follows:

Bangkok/Hanoi. Depart at 07.45; arrive Hanoi at 09.35
Saigon/Bangkok.  Depart at 20.55; arrive Bangkok at 22.20
Bangkok/Gatwick.  Depart at 00.15 (next day); arrive Heathrow at 06.20
Vietnam Airlines have direct flights to Hanoi from London Gatwick on Tuesdays and Fridays only, returning from Saigon on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  An extra day would need to be added to the above itinerary in order to ude these services.
