The Cape Winelands
The area known as 'The Winelands' lies to the east of Cape Town and is within an hour's drive from the city (some of our guests in fact choose to stay in the Winelands and visit Cape Town as a day trip). It is a region of great beauty which contains the earliest European settlements in South Africa in Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and Somerset West.
In our opinion the most scenic and sophisticated town in the Cape Winelands is Franschhoek, which has gained a reputation as the culinary capital of South Africa. It offers some of the finest vineyards and best accommodation in the region. One of the advantages of staying in Franschhoek is the availability of the popular 'hop-on, hop-off' Franschhoek Wine Tram, which enables you visit a selection of wine estates and restaurants at your own pace, without the need of a car.
Alternatively, also in the Winelands but further to the east (on the way towards the Garden Route) lies the less visited but up-and-coming town of Robertson in the Breede River Valley. This is an area that produces top quality wines and offers enjoyable river trips with wine-tasting among other activities.
