Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage
Located about one and a half hours' drive to the west of Kandy, the Pinnewala Elephant Orphange is one of Sri Lanka's most popular attractions. Set up in 1975, there are now almost 100 elephants at Pinnewala, making it the world's largest group of captive elephants; this unique project has proved the salvation of these threatened animals, but it has also resulted in their domestication, which some people feel needs to be addressed. The World Discovery Sri Lankan representatives will try to time the visit to coincide with one of the two daily feeding sessions, when the elephants are driven across the road to the Ma Oya river for a leisurely bath - a charming spectacle.
